Hello

We have recently acquired a 1.6 three door Grand Vitara on a 52 plate. It's fitted with a silly after market 'chav / boy racer' exhaust.

I find the car sluggish when accelerating, though around three to three and a half thousand revs it suddenly picks up. Prior to that, it appears to make no difference as to whether you have your foot flat to the floor or whether you're just lightly on the throttle, the acceleration is about the same. It feels as if something is holding it back somewhat.

In addition, I'm only getting 25 mpg and that's on steady 20 to 30 mile runs too. I know fuel consumption on these isn't great but I was expecting mid thirties given the kind of driving I'm doing.

My first plan is to change the exhaust. But I wondered whether there was anything else that might be an easy solution. The car has been serviced this last month by my local independant garage and just had its timing belt changed. There is a bit of play in the fan belt too and it squeeks a touch in the wet. Finally, the car kept stalling prior to the service and the accelerator cable was fiddled with to rectify this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
