Hi all,
Ok, had my SJ for a few weeks now and at the moment its completely standard. Ive had it offroad once (nothing serious just a bit of rough green laning) I'm now thinking of what sort of mods i can do. Im after some sort of lift and new tyres but dont really know where to start. What do you all recommend towards body lift, shackles, shock lift and adding leafs and what exactly is the difference (probably a stupid question but i'm new to everything) Im not after anything too serious as it still has to be used as my A to B car. Then secondly what tyres are available and where's the best place to get them cheap as im on quite a tight budget with being a teenage bum
Would be greatful for any help.
Cheers, Colin. |

Hi Colin,
I'm no expert on this, but I have gathered from much reading that shackles are a bad idea due to overstraining your springs, reducing your approach and decline angles by sticking out the front too far, so I wouldn't go down that route.
As far as I know bodylifts are ok but fairly hard work to do.
I think uprated replacement leaf springs or add-aleafs (probably spelt wrong) are probably the best route and simplest way of getting a bit more height.
I'm fitting Bedford Rascal rear springs on my Samurai and then using most of the left over leaf spring parts from the removed Suzuki rear springs, to boost the front springs. I believe that gives about 2.5" extra height.
Of course it's worth remembering that if you raise the car, it's a good idea to widen it a bit too. Either spacers which I think put a lot of strain on the bearings, or wheels with a bigger offset.
I'm not sure where's best to buy wheels and tyres, but I find eBay has just about everything available if you keep looking.
This forum has tons of info if you want to know more, you've just got to keep reading.
I hope this was of some help mate.

Colin get the spring over axles conversion done, brackets £30 ish off flea bay unless you cut yours off and reuse them and fitting takes mere hours unless you cant weld!!!
I cant so i paid someon3 £100 to do the whole conversion for me.
Gives approx 6-8 inches of height without affecting gear levers etc etc.
And a set of 32mm spacers to give the extra width, feels much more planted now
cheers
