Hi all,
Cut a long story short, I was out last week off road and i clipped a tree trunk and slit my n/s/f tyre. My tyres are 215/80/15.
Basically, the tyre company have gone bust so i cant get a replacement so will have to but a new set in due time.
Well, after i popped the tyre the only spare i had was a 16" road tyre i think its 215/65/16.
Now, i went out off road yesterday with a few of the lads and i was told i shouldnt use just the one road wheel, so i used another road wheel i have on the o/s/f. So i had the 2 knobblys on the rear and the 2 road tyres on the front.
Now.. All was well, went off road had a great time. Now, when i got back onto the road and put it into 2wd i started feeling a really vigorous vibrating/shaking. It starts between 30-35 and thats when its worse, but the shaking/vibrating gets faster, the faster you go. You can feel it on the steering, the gearstick, the 4wd selector stick, and generally the whole vehicle shakes. I maybe thought id bottomed out and perhaps bent the prop? When i got 5 mins from home i thought id try and put it on 4wd to see what happened. When i pulled away the steering was all over the place, trying to pull itself left/right and the whole vehicle felt as if it was trying to stop itself (brake) so i pulled over and engaged 2wd. When i pulled away it done exactly the same thing for maybe 1/4 mile and then i heard a huge clunk and it was back to normal (steering wise) but i still have the horrible vibrating.
I am now thinking could it be a diff problem? Could i have caused problems using the 2 road wheels? Why would it shake? I am really confused!
If anyone has any help i would be more than thankful!!
Cheers,
Jamie |

From what I can see, you may have damaged the diffs or transfer box. Because you had different size tyres on the front and rear and the vitara has no central diff, the large rear wheels were trying to push the jeep forward faster than the front wheels were allowing. That explains the braking
I won't speculate on what else has happened but I'd take it to a garage asap and see what they find. |

It sounds like you have wound one of the diff's up, this can happen also when you drive around with diff lock on, I bet the same thing has happened because of the different tyre sizes on each axle, like the last comment said get it to a garage to see if it can be sorted. |
