|
|
Hey everyone, hoping someone can clear something up for me...
I'm from the UK and I moved to Cyprus a few years back, I recently bought a new 08 Model Suzuki, which came from the dealers with the Escudo badge, after purchase I looked into the name, and found out it was infact a Vitara... Or what looks like one, I've never seen one called anything other than Vitara.
It's a 3 door 1.6 with 4 wheel drive.
So my question is, why is it named an Escudo, when it's so clearly not?! |

Hiya mate, loads of cars are known by different names in different parts of the World. I'd heard the Vitara called Escudo before, who could forget the famous Pikes Peak Escudos? (yes I know they it doesn't look much like a vitara but these evolution motorsport cars rarely do look like the road going version).
The Vitara is also known as the Sidekick, the Geo/Chevrolet Tracker and the Mazda Proceed Levante. Have a look at the wiki page for the Vitara here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_Vitara _________________

You'll be pleased to hear it wasn't really Lawn Roller then mate, Santana made the Spanish built Zooks, they also made their own vehicle called the PS10 which is basically a Defender body on a Series 3 chassis and running gear (parabolic springs instead of normal leafs), with the Iveco 2.8td engine wedged in there...
I quite fancy one of them really . They've ceased production now anyway... _________________

Santana in Spain have been doing many suzukis, the PS-10 (known as Anibal) and a version of the Vitara, the Santana 300/350.
Last 14 of september Santana left his contract with Suzuki, so nowadays Santana is closed, but they are planning to restart the production of a new version of the Jimny
Here is the Santana's website: http://www.santana-motor.es/SantanaMotor/porta.htm
And a photo of the 300 and the 350, sold in Spain last years:

Well well, seems that the although Santana's relationship with Land Rover finished in 1981 and they didn't start making Suzukis until 1986, they didn't actually change the name from "Land Rover Santana, SA" to "Santana Motor, SA" until 1991, so there's 5 years of Zooks built under license by a company that still had the words Land Rover in it's name, even though there was no link between Santana and Land Rover during that time, and Santana were actually 20% owned by Suzuki since the early 80s ....
Every day's a school day eh?? _________________
