My Sammy just wont run right, it's been playing up for a good 3 weeks and im starting to lose my rag with it. When cold it starts fine and runs until the choke comes off then loses revs and stalls. The fuel mixture is correct until the choke comes off. It's as if the engine has an air leak somewhere and is sucking air in from somewhere it shouldn't be. We've had the carb in pieces and cleaned it all up making sure the fuel jets are all free of dirt (done this twice now) But no luck the car starts then stalls. We've blocked off each and every air pipe in turn to make sure they're all working as they should. And guess what everything works fine. Changed the manifold gasket but it has no affect. Simple thing is i've now run out of things to check and still have no idea what it could be. If anyone has any bright ideas please i'd love to hear them.
Thanks. |

Hello mate,
I'm just stabbing in the dark here as I'm not a mechanic or even a long term zooky owner, but I've recently bought a Samurai and I couldn't get it to run no matter what I tried.
I had the carb off dozens of times, replaced all the gaskets, cleaned it, re-adjusted it and could never make it run properly.
Some of the problems were, it hunted, stalled, revved too high, run weak etc etc, depending on the set-up.
Eventually after reading no end of posts about running problems with the standard carb, I decided to change the carb for an SU as they are supposed to be the best solution. There are several guides to doing this on the internet and this forum.
I hope you get it sorted soon. _________________ Alan

Ye a few people have said the same on difflock. So does your car run properly now with the SU carb on it? |

I've fired my car up for the first time today since bolting the new carb on, still haven't rigged up an air filter, but it started with a couple of turns and runs strong and nice.
I haven't driven it anywhere yet because I've got all the leaf springs off it, but I would say by the way it's running now, that it'll drive perfectly.
In my opinion changing the rubbish original carb for an SU was well worth the effort, so far anyway _________________ Alan
