Intermittent fault with 4WD Suzuki GV

I have a Suzuki GV 53 plate.  I am having problems with the 4 wheel drive.  Intermittently it keeps engaging 4wheel drive for no reason.  The 4WD lights up on the dash, it sometimes actually goes into 4wd and sometime not.  When it pops in there is sometimes quite a shudder, or clunking noise, and when it pops out again there seems to be a 'winding down' sort of noise.  Without moving the 4wd lever I know it is technically impossible that this can happen.  What is going on - does anyone know?
