I hope this is the correct section and somebody may be able to help.  The bonnet catch and/or release cable of my wife's Vitara 1997 (P) needs attention.  Having removed the bonnet catch it is difficult to see how it is supposed to operate, but I think there might be a spring missing.  The inner cable and outer sleeve appear to be connected at each end as I can feel some movement at the catch end when someone pulls the release button in the glove box - so I don't think the cable is actually broken.  However, even if activated manually with a screw driver the catch does not stay over to hold the bonnet fully down.

Unbeknown to me, the wife has been driving around without the bonnet being properly shuty for months!! Fortunately the safety catch stops it from flying open, but it needs to be fixed.  Is there a diagram available online somewhere showing how the catch operates, so I can work out what is going on?  Otherwise I can see I will end up replacing the whole mechanism and cable.  The Haynes manual is next to useless, as it seems to cover about five models and barely mentions the Vitara.

Hope someone may be able to help.

Cheers, Ian
