Hi all,

I have just Waxoyled the underside of my chassis and on inspection I have noticed that the front underside of my rear arches are just starting to rust a little.

What would be the best thing to put on here do you think?  Is there something a bit 'thinner' than waxoyl that would work well?

Cheers

Benner

You could put Kurust or similar on it. basically all the rust "remedies" are phosphoric acid in various gel forms. Phosphoric acid neutralises the rust (don't ask me all the technicallities of the chemical process  Confused ). After neutralising the rust you can then prime and paint in the usual way. In my experience you will never completely get rid of the rust, but short of cutting it out and welding in new metal this method is the best you can do. Should last for quite a while (probably years if done well) before it needs doing again  Wink

I forgot to mention that halfords do a little kit by hammerite that contains a wire brush, paintbrush, kurust and primer.  Wink

I ended up using kurust then going over that with Waxoyl clear.  Worked quite well as being clear, I could paint it in the wheel arch without it being seen.

Anyway job done and hopefully will keep my arches intact for a bit longer.

Given up trying to weld my 410, the rear arches are held together and sealed with Gripfill from my local builders mercahants, brilliant stuff, has kept it watertight for the last 12 months, well almost anyway. Laughing

Just discovered a great way of getting rid of rust though, found the tip on POCUK forum. Malt vinegar!. Took the wheel carrier off the sammy at the weekend, rusty as hell it was, left it to soak in a bowl of the stuff for 2-3 days and gave it a scrub with a wire brush, absolutely no rust left on it at all now, i was amazed Surprised
Be nothing left of my 410 if i spilt a bottle on it Laughing

That works because
Malt vinegar = Acetic Acid
Most rust removing compounds use Phosphoric acid so it all has a similar effect  Wink

That's interesting to know. I used to use a product made by Swarfega and that worked well.  Smelled absolutely foul though!

It's worth noting that pickling vinegar usually has a higher acid content so should work quicker.
I can't say i've ever tried this though as i stick to the rust removing products

Were they trying to tell you something ??   sign5

I was lucky with my `D` reg  Jap one  they rust slower.

All i needed to weld was this .

But did have the heater matrix split and ended up doing this !!!!

And yes it did go back together

Thats why i havn`t started on the real offroad mods yet.

My white sammy is a spanish one and is riddled in rust and it`s a K reg  !!
