Hi all,

Help, I have recently purchased a1988 SJ410, all fine until the CAT fell to pieces insdie its box.  The sytem has been replaced but ever since the car starts fine but runs progessively rougher until it coughs, backfires and splutters to a stop.  Having looked under the vehicle all seems well - except there is no CAT on the new exhaust. The vehicle is carbed, not efi so no engine management system, and everything has been cleaned and checked out, so is it possible the CAT, or lack of it is causing the problems?

Any help much appreciated as I am tearing out what little hair I have left.

thanks lots

Sven

You could try running it without the exhaust.  If the problem still happens, I would have a good look at the distributor.

Thanks Ian,

Distributor, rotor arm, point and condenser new and all eem to work on the drive, and for a bit on the road until it splutters to a stop as described.  I'll take the exhaust off after the headers and give it a blast....

Thanks again for your time

Sven

Does the carb have an automatic choke?

Does the spluttering to a stop happen when the engine is idling, or when the vehicle is being driven?  If the former, suspect the vacuum operated hot idle compensator, which my FSM shows for the manual carb, but does not explain.

When idling, I'll have a look at the compensator - if I can find it - :)

I've been reading more in the FSM, and I think the problem may be the idle speed and idle mixture settings:

Get the engine warm.  Adjust the idle speed upwards to keep it running till its at normal temperature, or use a bit of choke.  Then, with zero choke, set the idle speed to 880 rpm, and adjust the idle mixture both ways to get maximum rpm.  Reset idle speed to 880 and repeat mixture adjustment for maximum.

Then, without further movement of the idle speed adjuster, set rpm to 840-850 by turning idle mixture clockwise (closing) to get CO2 to 1.5 +- 0.5.  If you haven't got a gas analyser, I would just get the rpm within the band and call it good.
