I have a 1997 Vitara JX Sport 1600 8 valve

Over the last couple of weeks the engine sounds as though the choke is stuck and is rough to the ear. Symptoms are;
After 20 minutes (or so) of a journey-When stationary the engine revs will rise and fall between 1100 & 2500 rpm-Does not happen all the time.
Engines revs will not fall to idle-stick between 1000 & 1500.
Engine will accelerate away evenly and with some power.
No lights come on at dashboard-Suzuki tell me there is no point running a diagnostic.
Plugs replace 10,000 miles ago.
New battery last week.
Recently passed an MOT.

Anybody got any experience of this and can give me an idea of what is going on?

Cheers

Stuart

My guess would be the auto choke (if you have one fitted). If this is so, try cleaning the carb with a carb spray cleaner, followed by flushing the coolant through the carb via the inlet pipe through the outlet

What happens is the internals get clogged with corrosion, not allowing the wax element to work correctly, effectively confusing the auto-choke.

Just an idea - good luck.

"No lights come on at dashboard-Suzuki tell me there is no point running a diagnostic." Well that just shows what they know. I would want to know what the temp sensor  is doing, stft and ltft are doing in live data, just to name a few. If they are not prepared to help go to an independant garage with tech2.
