99 T plate SWB Vitara 1.6 8v, driving back down to Cornwall on the M5 earlier today when I suddenly lost steering at 70mph. Fortunately I'm not dead, but it seems to be an issue with the nearside freewheeling hub locking up - I got the car onto the hard shoulder but it refused to go any further even with the hubs unlocked, nearside front wheel not moving. I thought the wheel bearing had gone, but the car free-wheels in neutral with the engine off, and I've driven it a short distance with the front hubs locked but still in 2WD (literally 10 yards) and the wheel is turning fine. Any ideas or insight please?
