While offroading today I pulled the handbrake on while moving in 4L (very stupid thing to do), causing the rear wheels to lock up and the front wheels to continue moving. During skidding a horrible grinding sound came from the front diff/axle. Considering the torque is split 50/50 between front/rear wheels in 4L, the rear wheels locking up have maybe caused the front to attempt to lock, causing a ground crownwheel & pinion perhaps? Anyways now whenever I engage 4wd the front diff grinds and shudders, especially when turning the steering wheel either way. The car still drives fine in 2H and can only really be driven in 2H now.
Has anyone else encountered a similar problem with the 4wd system on their GV? Does anybody know the exact source of the problem? Transfer box or front axle or maybe both?
