Hi all ,can any one tell me please,what is the right way to check my auto box oil ,has it to running ,stopped,in gear running

enigne running and in neutral but run up and down the gears with the lever first to make sure the fluid is all through the box.
unless theres a cold mark on the dipstick? _________________ the car in front is a toyota...
