Hi,

I have just purchased my first 4x4 a 1999 Suzuki Jimny 16v. I has not been used for the last year. It starts and runs very well but has constant white smoke from the exhaust. The guy I brought it from said that it was a struggle to get it through the emissions test on the last MOT.
I have changed the oil and filter and stuck a can of Redex stop smoke in but its still smoking. There is no white in the oil and the water level is not going down.
Can anyone give advice on what might be causing this, Valve stem seals, worn rings ??

Cheers Colin

hi mate, when you remove oil filler with engine running, do you get smoke/fumes banging out? this would be a sign of rings, but this isnt always the case, as it is more a test of compression rings rather than oil control rings, the valves are harder to test, i am not sure about your engine, but if you can.. take rocker cover off, then pour oil down where the valve springs sit, and see how quick it runs away, this will give you an idea how bad the valve stem seals are.  plus another idea would be to get a engine compression tester, and just see how good and also how even the compression of each cylinder is.
personally, if you have experience, i would wip the head off and do the valve seals, and regrind the valves, and give the bores a gentle polish, as this is the cheapest option, a few quid for the seals, probs about 20 quid for head gasket, just lots of fiddly fun!!

its its "steam" than I would go to a parts store and pick up a coolant to oil tester. this will test if coolant it in the oil. if so you may have a cracked head, bad head gasket etc. If it is blue smoke (looks white) than its burning oil and you need rings more than likely.
