I bought a 2002 Grand Vitara in the UK and want to register in France. Unfortunately, Suzuki tell me that I can not get a Certificate of Conformity because the vehicle was type approved before 1998.

As I understood it a certificate has to be produced for all vehicles manufactured and 'imported' after 1998 irrespective of when the vehicle was originally approved!

Where can I get one???

youve misunderstoood.

the type approved status only came into effect on vehicles registered on or after 1st jan 2002

anything registered before that cannot have a certifricate of conformity as there was no such thing at that time

What I can't understand is we have re-registered two cars before.

A Vauxhall registered in 1998 and manufactured in 1997 and also a Mitsubishi registered 2001. Both of these had Certificates of conformity.
The rpoblem I have is the MOT centre (controle technique) won't control the car without the Certificate - rock and hard place...

This was registered 1-9-2002

Zocko

I went through Suzuki UK - customer services...

I have asked them to double check because their info is misleading. They sent a Certificate of Construction which has less informetion than the registration document and a complete waste of time for the French - they love their paperwork!!

I will drop in at a dealer next week to see if there is anything they can do. The main thing the french want is the puissance fiscal (determines how much tax we pay to change the name - this is 7) and the tyre sizes - which are noted on the 'carte grise'. I can give them this info but its not official. There used to be a system to fill all the forms in then one office would check the information and stamp it as a certificate after you paid in a different office and re-registered in another all after the tax office have stamped a form to say that you don't owe any taxes - we did that for the Mitsubishi. They decided it wasn't efficient so can't do this now!
