Hi All
seems that my battery has become faulty and needs changing.  Being a licenced radio Ham I want to fit a heavy duty battery anyone able to suggest a battery.
I also need to know how to work out the size of the alternator (AMP'S OUT) with out having to remove the alternator.

the amperage is listed on the alternator label, and the battery should be fine in standard form if you buy a quality one.
if you want to upgrade it properly, try looking at optima batteries. expensive and the look like a six pack of coke but the rolls royce of batteries

You could always think about a split charge relay. This may have several advantages for you. Firstly, it means if you are mobile, and parked up chatting, you are not compromising your starting battery, so will always be able to get home. Secondly, if you use a leisure battery as the second battery, they have a lower discharge profile than general car battery's so you can chat longer. There are various options for this, but one of the cheapest  (£20) gives you a double fused system requiring no rewiring of the alternator that auto senses charging need, but will only charge the 2nd battery once the primary is fully charged' which is normally quite often, and therefore a good use of power that's otherwise wasted
