Please please can anyone help us, my son purchased a suzuki vitara which has been modified for off road as well as on road, when he was learning to drive it cost us roughly 80 per month now he has passed his test the cheapest insurance is £8,000 because of mods on it.  It has a gear changed so top speed is about fifty, a small body lift of about 3 inches and a snorkel fitted, he only uses it to get to and from fields and farms for work or shooting.  In my eyes it is not aboy racer car he cant take passengers as he has taken two back seats out and he certainly cant throw it around and speed.  We have looked at selling it and getting a small corse 973cc engine and he can insure it for £3,400 but he can take 4 passengers, a nippy little car that could be classed as a boy racer car.  I am at my wits end please can anyone help we have tried loads of 4x4 insurance companies and young persons insurance companies.  Its looking like this car will have to be sold.  thanks

It does seem a terrible shame but I tried to insure mine for a 25 yo son to drive infrequently and didnt get much
joy. Then tried to get him on Isuzu in my name, again for infrequent use......quoted £295/995 which was a bit of a range Shocked
Go compare gave me the best value but I wasnt trying to insure a modded vehicle! Only advice I can offer is avoid
Budget Car Insurance if you can,Im not the only forum member to have had trouble with them Crying or Very sad
Suggestions I have had are: try getting quotes for fully comp, tpft etc as sometimes results surprise
also try adding yourself as  a named driver
finally, how much have you valued it at? have you been realistic?
Sorry I cant give you better news, good luck

Not much you can do for young drivers in this case i think, Highway do specific 4x4 insurance and you can put it on limited mileage, they usually insist you have another car though so that its not your main vehicle.

only thing i can think of is to get him running in something cheaper until he has a couple of years driving experiance under his belt before trying to insure something "weird" and trailer his Vitara to the fields, he'll need to take a trailer test though as the Vitara will be over his towing limit.

Thank you for your comments, I am so gobsmacked at insuracne quotes and red tape, we have for the time being sourced a little corsa and managed to get it insured with all our other vehicles going over to the same company, we now just need to decide to keep vitara and trailer it everywhere or sell and re think in a couple of years.  THanks again.
