First off let me say Hi all & thanks for providing such a useful resource, nice to know my new toy is well supported info-wise...
Anyway the information I'm after is a bit obscure really as I doubt many people consider the scenario I have...
Since I'm the new boy here I'll give you a bit of background to the situation, which is that I've just been given a 1995/6 (N reg.) Vitara Fatboy that belonged to a friend's son.
The vehicle was in tidy shape until it got stuck in a ditch on a slidefest one icy night last year. Now unfortunately when the lad went to get help some "unsavouries" for want of a better description (well, one that would not see me banned for offensive language!) appear to have come along & smashed every bit of glass in the thing, pee'd all over the interior & rammed it onto it's side with something wearing a heavy bullbar
So the score is I've now taken custody of said vehicle (minus interior!) and intend to modify it for use as an off roading toy. However most pay & play sites that I've found in the local area, despite being off-road sites by their very nature, somehow conversely seem to stipulate that people paying good money to them for the privilege of using their bit of mud must use a vehicle that is taxed/tested & insured... Now that's not such a major problem when it comes to the lights & bodywork as it can be made legal very cheaply, more troublesome is the lack of any windows in the vehicle.
What I really need to find out (hence the reason behind this short novel you've just trawled through, sorry! ) is the legalities around windscreens/lack thereof. I.E. would the vehicle be capable of passing an MOT with no windscreen fitted?
I'm aware that a lot of other vehicles are capable of being legally driven round with the roof/door tops off & windscreen folded down, and indeed I've seen some topless kit cars sans-screen but the issue here is that obviously the vitara has a fixed roof & windscreen frame so I'm not as definite about that.
If anyone knows the state of play and/or is running an RTV with no screen I'd love to know the whys and wherefores since spending yet more cash on a bonded screen which no-doubt would end up cracked/smashed within days anyway isn't really my idea of money well spent...
As an aside to the glassware question, can anyone also explain why exactly a lot of sites require off-roaders to have RTV status when they're nowhere near a road? (I can understand the safety aspect but 1, an MOT is no guarantee the vehicle is roadworthy/safe anyhow & 2, surely the important aspects (steering, brakes, seatbelts) can be very quickly checked by site staff before entry is granted...) and as for sites that require tax on them too, just WHY?????
Cheers for any suggestions, Dan... |

You dont need glass in it for an MOT, in fact with no windscreen the washers and wipers dont have to work either, although id be reluctant to go off road in an open vehicle, the mud and sticks will get uncomfortable as they get fired at your head, i suspect the sites insurance or planning permission requires them to have road legal vehicles only in an effort to stop the nutty high speed specials making a nuisnace of themselves. _________________

I put my old landrover series 3 through the test several years running with no windscreen (wipers are fixed to the top of the screen on that so taking the screen off takes the wipers with it) no doors and no roof on it and it passed no problems, it always ran like that as it was just a summer fun car.
If your gonna run it without a screen, then just chop the widscreen pillars off it as well and plate over the gaps it leaves, the Vitara has a seperate chassis so you can chop bits of body off it without effecting the strength, I'd fit a full cage in case you end up upside down though which will probably cost you more than a screen unless you make your own.
If it has no A pillars on it it should be obvious to look at that you modified it to run without a screen, that should cure the problem, modified cars can pass MOT. _________________

I still think it would pass if you removed it, i cant find anthing to say it would fail on the screen, allthough my manual is a couple of years old.
As far as i have always been lead to believe, if something is not fitted it cant be tested, I cant find any info that says you NEED a windscreen to pass an MOT, just that if you have one it must be in good condition.
On a Vitara it would not even be considered structural as the car has a seperate chassis.

As you say you rang them, i was waiting for you to tell us which part of the MOT book says you need a screen, I assume you asked them to tell you which chapter its covered by rather than just take someones word for it?
For all I know you were talking to a general enquiries person, or even a secretary who just didnt want the hassle of putting you through to anyone with any authority.
If they can show, in the MOT testers rule book where it says you MUST have a windscreen then i'll shut up, but far to many cars pass without screens for me to just take your word for it I'm afraid.
Its got nothing to do with which planet I'm on, its to do with what the MOT rules say and not what some guy on a phone says unless he can point you at the part that backs him up.
No need for personal attacks just because i happen to disagree with you, a forum is defined as a place for discussion and sharing information. _________________

My future brother in law is an MOT man, i just rang him and asked and he wasn't sure, he couldn't think of a reason to fail it off the top of his head.
He only works half days saturday but he's going to check tomorrow if he has time and if VOSA say "no" he will find out where its covered in the book. _________________
