Hi, I recently bought a 1991 Samurai. It has been used and abused for a couple of years. The main problem is the steering, over bumps and round sweeping bends it has a mind of its own. Very dangerous. A mechanic had a look and changed 4 bearings .It is better but still dangerous.I can see he has adjusted the screw on the steering box. The chap I bought it from said the problem was the two large metal balls on the steering. However he was no mechanic. Can these be adjusted? Any ideas?
Many thanks Graham.
btw Incredible off road in the Andes(Peru)

look for play in the ball joints on the drag bar and steering bar.
this is probably where your play is coming from _________________ the car in front is a toyota...

Thanks for your suggestions.I had a look and the movement seems to be a combination of wear on everything. However I checked tyre pressures ,it had 48 on tne back and 43 on the front.I lowered all the pressures to 35 and the steering is alot better.much safer to drive.I will let the mechanic have another look and see what he can do.The latest problem seems to be economy. The engine had a rebuild 2 months ago .So it is due for an oil and filter change, also the tappits need adjusting. At the moment I am getting about 20 to the gallon, top speed is about 50 mph.Hopefully this will improve after a service.I had a samurai about 10 years ago ,with a 1 litre engine. This did 45 to the gallon and 65 flat out.so fingers crossed. Thanks Graham |
