Posted: Tue Jun 22, 2010 1:15 Post subject: Steering Damper? Are they Needed? Any DIY solutions? |
|
|
I was just thinking about wether a +3"or more lift vitara with knobby tyres (Recip Trial) and power steering needs a steering damper?
I have had this car dislocate my thumb ( ) at a 4x4 event when the tyre caught on a root and whipped the steering wheel round... will a damper aid this/slow it down so the steering wheel doesnt whip about so much?
AND if it does need one, is there a DIY solution or a guide or someone to help me do it?
ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED.
Cheers, Christian. |

i have thought the same thing.
they are more geared for keeping the wheel stable at speed.
mine is never driven on the street, so i dont even know if it will help.
im going to disconnect mine on the next ride and see if its doing anything. |

So you do have one fitted to your vit?
Mine never touches tarmac too and doesnt really get that fast, but is very twitchy at higher speeds with a 3"+ lift and big knobbly tyres... Its main purpose in life is mud plugging so im not sure i need it or not??
so i am wondering if i need one?
Cheers, Christian. |

itll reduce the risk of wheel snatch at low speed, not stabilise at high speed.
it does help but its your choice if you want it.
power steering should make it more stable at high speed (unless i fitted it lol) but its abalance between stiffness and feel, ie the stiffer you have it the less feedback youll get back from the wheels. _________________ the car in front is a toyota...

when isnt a samurai stiff when turning? haha.
stock tires maybe, or in some slippery mud.
low speed is where i need help. if in fact the damper does its job, is the big "old man emu" that rocky road sells worth the 75 bucks, or does a nice stock replacement get you by? |

power steering can be fitted for around £450 including parts...
only down side is itll suddenly feel so light youll almost forget you have wheels attached to the front lol _________________ the car in front is a toyota...

Okay.... so i have a 3 inch or more (?!) lifted vitara running 235/75R15's (recip trial so knobbly as *beep*!) and i have power steering. It only travels low speeds off road in deep mud. Is it worth fitting a damper or not?
Got my power steering off a fat-boy that i bought as a donor vehicle as my engine blew! So was free and very easy to fit with the engine out!
Paul(zocko) please could you reply to my PM about the damper you have???
Cheers, Christian. |

i wouldnt bother fitting one if it spends most of its time in the mud |
