Yeah I've sussed it now.
There's a lot of info and opinions out there, so it's a case of reading through it all and then deciding what's best for yourself.
Some people say that fitting the adapter plate moves the starter back from the flywheel and the main drive shaft from the gearbox out a few mil.
Personally I don't think it sounds like it would bother me if it did do that, but I've also read about loads of people just enlarging the two top holes in the block to suit the Vitara gearbox's two top bolts and drilling the two bottom bolt holes through the excess engine block material to allow you to pass long bolts through the two Vitara bottom bolt holes, that way everything lines up as it should.
Being the sort of person who enjoys a bit of fabricate it yourself, I probably would have attempted to mate the engine and gearbox together without an adapter plate anyway, now knowing that this may even be the better option, I think that's the way I'll definitely go. _________________ Alan

After much preparation I'm finally fitting my new 1.6 Vitara engine this coming weekend.
I can't wait to be back on the mud and am really looking forward to seeing how much better the Samurai is with the engine upgrade. _________________ Alan

Yep will do mate.
Got a troop of helpers so hopefully the physical side of things should go without too much hassle. The only problem will be if I've forgotten to get something I needed or I break something.
Luckily I've still got the whole Vitara at hand for if there's any Vit bits I need, and we're all pretty handy when it comes to fabricating if there's anything which isn't quite right. _________________ Alan

Cheers mate. You wont be able to keep up once I've got my new engine in
As soon as I'm up and running properly, I'll organise a meet up, maybe some greenlaning or something if you're up for it. _________________ Alan

I'm very pleased to say that after a really, really long day. A lot of cuts, bruises and stress, I managed to drive my Samurai home from the workshop with my new 1600 Vitara engine fitted.
It started after just a couple of turns with no smoke, rattles or leaks and drives very well. Considerably more pokey and responsive too
I've got a bit of tinkering to do to make it perfect, but nothing serious.
I will never drive through water that deep again!!! _________________ Alan
