Hey people

After some thinking and monitoring the fuel consumption on the vitara, i think i may be interested in swapping the 8v head for the 16v head, but would like to know.
Has anyone already done it on here?
Pro's and con's ?
Did you see a difference in fuel cosumption ?
Is there a project thread of it ?
What other parts, mods etc will i need to do ie ECU, wiring loom, air filter, or is simply 8v out and 16v in ?

Also does anyone know where i can pick up some automatic free wheeling hubs from---cheap ?

Thanks

Mike

i dont think the mpg on the 16v is much more than the 8v so if you save £5 per fill up how many miles will you have to do to pay for an engine and loom conversion Question
tbh i would sell  the 8v and try to find a 16v rather than do a conversion Very Happy

I'm assuming you mean to swap the full engine then and not just the head ?

What price is currently the norm for a 16v engine complete with all ancillaries and loom ? And what price could i get for the 8v engine ?

Another option is to put it through a rolling road run and tune up where i can, maybe reset or replace the carb.

Another alternative is to use the the peugot turbo diesel engine that was fitted in the later model vitara's, does anyone have any experieance with these engines ? And can i still use the origional gear box and clutch, or is it a full swap ie clutch, box, drive axles, prop shaft and hubs ?

you would also have to think about that cause your changing fuels you will need to change/modify your petrol tank and pump, clean your fuel lines out etc

Not going to be cheap i know for a deisel conversion, but there must some other engines that are more or less a stright swap for this chassis. Iv'e seen another project that Suzi Q's did and they transplanted the 2.0l turbo escort cosworth engine into one of there custom build mk1 vitatra's. Not that the wife wants that power and size as this vitara is now becoming a weekend car over the next few weeks as she has just moved offices and we can't justify 40 pounds a week on fuel for it, when her other car the renault megane scenic only uses £20 a week!

So it's a bit of a no brainer in that i have to repiar the cooling system on the scenic and leave the vitara on the drive until weekends.
