Just thinking about switching career, trying to get a bit of back round info on what is required of a CAD tech and how their work is presented to them. _________________

ah, I see. Suppose every company will be different. Normally if a company is looking for a cad tech or a draughtsperson, then thay will have engineers who you would be working with. It's normally them who will feed you the work. I get work fed to me from three hardware engineers, and the level and quality of information which I'm provided varies from one to the other. It can be a verbal instruction which only covers a small amount of the information, to a complete set of instructions/sketches and emails.
You can look for a company which suits what you're after I suppose. |

when you asked to doing some thing are you given measurements or a bunch of commands to follow or a bit of paper with a drawing.
Just trying to get an idea of how it works _________________

i used to be a cad programmer, we used to make office furniture so i would have to program where the holes go on the panels. it was pretty boring tbh coz once you program 1 item like a desk you save the pattern then thats it, u then have to stand infront of the machine drilling 50 of one side then 50 of the other then 50 tops and so on and so on..... i would like to get a table top cnc plasma cutter |

Ok i get that it is a bit of software that you can do fancy drawings, what i don't get how the drawing relates to real scale.
Just trying to see if it is worth investing in. A basic CAD evening course starts at college next week in the evenings. _________________

There are different types of CAD, and many different packages for each type. ie, if you were doing CAD for mechanical layouts, you could use autocad, solidworks,etc... then you get CAD systems for electrical layout, pipe and duct layout, and electronics. there are also cad systems specificly designed for use in a particular industry, ie automotive.
If you can get on to a course for autocad 2d, then that is general enough and not too much to learn in one go. that would be a good starting point. I took on a new starter in the drawing office a few years back. she picked up a copy of autocad, learned it herself, got this job, and then went to college just to get the certificate. |

you get given dimensions, they will have designed something then you punch in the size of the panel and where on x+y axis you want a certain size hole at what depth.... quite easy really |

I am one of the Engineers (aerospace components) who gives the sketches to the CAD guys or as there called in our company Design and Development, from my side some times I send them a dimensional sketch nothing complicated, other times call a meeting to talk through what I want and want it to do, other times send them what I already have to be "drawn up" on CAD.
From your side no I don't think art skills are important, a good understanding of materials and reasonable maths, and good computer skills.
Hope this helps oh and some of them design and devolution boys earn more than me _________________ There not canoes more of a snorkel and aero aid rolled into one |

At the moment i work as a wide area comms/internal IT/desktop support tech. The beginners course is £170 this does not give me any certs but should give me a better idea of how it works and whats expected of me, plus i have a friend who is a partner with AutoDesk and they are sorting me out with a trial copy of CAD 2011
I can do most things when i put the time and effort in. _________________
