What can cause white smoke + oil from the exhaust ?

after about 2 hours at briercliffe today the little sj started to blow oil out of the breather at the top of the engine,
then noticed it was also coming out the exhaust with loads of smoke (white smells of oil). so put a bung in the top breathe, topped up oil and played. smoke stopped and started all day. had to be topped up with oil a few times over the day. sj ran well no loss of water or anything like that, just oil and smoke.

your thoughts ????
work i need to do to sort out ????

never done anything like it before !! i might as well try it tho !!!

found this before is it worth getting test done ???

Before you consider doing a ring job, I suggest that you check the
compression first. If it's good, it indicates that the rings are sealing
properly and probably don't need replacement.

Next, I would rebuild the head with new valve guides and seals, which
are a more likely source of oil consumption and smoking problems than
the rings. That's not a particularly difficult job and it probably needs
to be done even if the engine does need rings.

it wint hurt to do both and its only about an 45 minute job once you have the head off.

its also a good time to drop the sump and clean all the old sludge out
