Hi my son has a 1998 1.6 16v vitara soft top (I belive the engine is multi point injection) the car start first time from cold and idles at about 2000 rpm nice and smooth (  as if on choke ?)  after a few minutes the engine temp starts to come up and the engine revs die a bit but start to hunt up and down from about 1000 - 2500 rpm  for a few minutes before the engine temp reaches normal and then the engine revs suddenly drop to a normal 750 - 800 idle.  is this normal on these cars  or is one of the sensors playing up.  
The engine has just had the head off and been overhauled and otherwise runs as smooth as a kitten.

its norml for the revs to be high to start with as its an automatic choke system on them. as for the hunting for a few minutes, its just something you get used to with an old car.
