My wife had a little look around the Vit when she took a boot-full of cardboard etc to the dump, and has discovered a patch of rust at the top of my rear-left arch. In the centre of this patch of rust is a hole about the size of a 10p coin. What is the most effective-but cheap method of fixing it? This is my first car, and I've never really tried a proper repair of anything so far, so please forgive my ignorance Razz

first thing you need to do is kill the rust.

paint on some kurust and leave it for a couple of days then go from there.

youll need to get rid of the old tinworm then patch it. you can either weld it or fibreglass it as its not structural. either way, a little elbow grease will go a long way.

in the meantime, put a little duct tape over the hole until you get a chance to sort it properly to keep the worst of the weather out.

just paint it on and it goes hard and shiny black. it kills the rust and allows you to bond straight onto it. if you want to fibreglass but make it stronget, instead of paying silly money for the aluminium mesh, just use a hole punch and punch a few holes on a bit of cereal packet, itll be just as strong as long as you glass onto both sides.

since its not exactly a huge hole, I was thinking maybe this would be ok to use after the kurust?

when the weather warms up I am going to do the two small holes on the front of my wings the advice given so far is as sound as it gets, before I re-trained I served my time as a panel beater and paint sprayer for Mercedes.
So when I do mine, I will do a step by step photo guide for the forum,  Rolling Eyes  but as zocko says elbow grease as well as preparation and patience is the key.

I would say that's more of a patch job cut out the rot and weld a repair panel. Sad

A good tip to prevent is always get the hosepipe and wash out behind the arches frequently so you don't get a build up of salty mud.

Any ideas roughly how much this should cost approx.  ... I'm always wary of garages ripping us gals off!  Rolling Eyes
