Is it neccessary to have a choke at all???

I have bought an SU carb with the float chamber on the side rather than underneath just in case i need to fiddle about with it then it will be easier to get at.

Ive bypassed the auto choke on my sammy at the moment but it dont run right and ticks over if it wants to,hence the SU upgrade!!

Are manual chokes easy to install??
