Hello all
I have a 1600 manual 94 vitara JlX with spanish Vin number-
This project was started 4 years  and several differtent address ago and as a result Ive lost scycronisation between crank/cam/distributer-the head was removed so  the valves could be reground due to carbon build up i finally had a go and rebuilt the engine last night but on turn over pressure is coming out through the air intake- i put no1 cyl to TDC with the crank alignment mark(on bottom timing belt pulley), the cam i set up with the no 1  cyls cams pointing down ie ( /o\ ) and this lined up one of  the cam sprocket timing marks ((of wihch there appears to be 2 @approx 120 degree seperation-i went with the wear marked slot)) the distributer rotar i set to just before no1 cylinder -turned her over by hand and set vave clerances as stated in the Haynes manual-then found in haynes that the tdc is taken off no 4 cylinder????is this right - Does any one know how to to manually set up the correct alignment of these engines - im gettin a good spark, and petrol.
any help or insight would be much appreciated

try putting the leads on the opposite positions and then try to start it. if it fires youre 180 degrees out on the timing.

same mistake i made.

if not then go back to basics and take a fresh look at the timing marks.

if you were gonna get valve strike, youd feel it turning it over by hand.

does the engine turn over freely by hand with the plugs out?

if the sensor is breaking down, youll need to replace it, it cant be repaired.
