Hi ALL,

1998/9 vitara 1.6 -8valve 4U2 . 44 thousand miles only!!
When driving the "Check Engine "warning light comes on and stays on,
it is intermittant and sometimes never comes on at all, and other times just comes on,
if i pull over and turn off ignition and then re-start light stays off,but then will come on
again any time after.
i went to wales from wolves about 120 mile and it never came on ,another time you can
go 5 mile and on it comes.
car has new fuel filter, air filter ,plugs ,oil and filter (never uses any ) and runs nice.
i have cleaned oxegen sensor and looks ok and does not seem exessive on fuel.
do i have a cat , lambda or relay problem??

after much rooting around i found this.

hope its of some use  Wink

NOTE: This information does not apply to carberated engines, as they will have a check engine light but don't store codes, so you have to troubleshoot manually to determine which sensor is causing the problem.

DTCs may be accessed by installing a spare fuse into the fuse box diagnostic terminal, located under the LH side of the instrument panel, then turning the ignition On.

Reading trouble codes
The instrument panel Check Engine lamp displays the DTCs. In normal operation the lamp will light when the ignition is turned on.

However, two different lamp functions can occur when the engine is started. The lamp may turn off immediately, indicating there is no fault at that time, or stay lit, informing the vehicle operator that there is a system failure. If the lamp stays lit a DTC will be stored in the ECM memory. When a DTC is accessed from the ECM memory the Check Engine lamp will flash in a series, indicating the DTC number. When multiple system failures occur applicable DTCs will be indicated three times each.

DTCs will continue to flash as long as the ignition is On, and the diagnostic switch terminals are grounded.

Clearing Codes
DTCs may be erased by disconnecting and isolating the battery ground cable for more than 60 seconds, or after 50 key cycles if the malfunction has not recurred.

the egr valve is prone to clogging as well, could be worth taking it off and giving it a clean
