Hi

I have a question to ask. Think of this scenario. I am well off-road in my Jimny and it breaks down. Cannot move. Miles from the nearest tarmac. I wish to retrieve my Jimny but I am informed that I cannot tow it out on 4 wheels and I will need to get a dolly, raise the back wheels onto it and tow it out backwards with the steering locked. Now there is no dolly that I can find that can cope with the wild conditions that I find off-road. This Jimny is one of the new breed with button selection of the alternative drives and there is no means of selection of Neutral as in the older models (hence the towing arrangement noted).

So, thinking about the problem - would it be possible to disconnect entirely the rear transmission shaft (fairly easy - 8 bolts) so there is no reverse drive from the rear wheels back through the transfer box? The front wheel drive will be disconnected by selecting in the 2-wheel drive mode. This arrangement should allow for the safe removal of the Jimny by conventional towing.

Would anyone like to comment. Your views would be appreciated.

Colin

I looked into this before i towed my vit back.

If you do searches on flat towing you should find info on here or google that picks up another site, also the owners manual is a very good source of information, being a bloke, i would rather not read the manual, but in this case it was an eye opener !

If you took the rear prop shaft out, then you will be effectively towing with the rears on a dolly, as the rear wheels wouldnt move and you would be a-ok !

The rear wheels will move (they are on the ground) but theyt will only spin their own (rear) diff not either of the gearboxes so it would be fine I reckon
