Sad Hi to Suzuki owners, please can anyone help with a problem with a Grand Vitara Sport 1600cc 2005, 75,000 miles.  The temperature gauge on a run goes up to hot and then comes back down to normal and then back up and back down.  Have changed the thermostat and sender switch and coolant.  The water level does not move and car runs well.  Has anybody had the same problem or can anyone suggest why this is happening?  Thanks very much.

if you run the car stationary, does the fan behind the radiator come on at the same time as the temp goes up?

Thanks for responding.  No, looking at the car from the front the left side of the radiator is very hot, middle and right hand side is cold.

seems like a blockage, or a bad thermostat.

remove the two radiator hoses and flush out the radiator with a hose.

if water flows freely through it then remove the thermostat and repeat the process through the engine.

might also check the waterpump.

best of luck pal Wink

Thanks for the suggestion, I've been told it's the head gasket with a possible repair bill totalling £750 so I'm not happy.  I've put a temporary solution in it for now and it's booked to go into the garage next week but I will try out your suggestion first.  Thanks again Sad

Hi Jackie, the symptoms you reported in the OP don't sound like a head gasket to me. Head gasket going usually means you'll get emuslion in your oil (check inside the oil filler and the dipstick) or if it's gone between the water jacket and one of the cylinders you'll get pressurisation of the water system but it'll use water and you'll probably be able to see and hear bubbles coming back into the expansion tank when you rev it. This happened on a Nova I had, didn't appear to affect performance but one day it blew the top off the bottle on the way home from work and spat all the dirty boiling water out all over the inside of the bonnet and down the wing. Easy to check for by asking the garage to do a "sniff test", checks for exhaust gasses coming through the coolant into the expansion tank.

I'd instictively go for the thermostat too but if you've changed it and the coolant without any difference it's unlikely to be that. Is it possible theres an airlock in the system somewhere?

Hi, thanks for replying, the engine does not use water but there is a slight smell to the antifreeze and your idea about the water pump might be right, although there is no leakage, thanks again.

if it is in fact the headgasket, im almost certain that your coolant cap or your oilcap would be covered in what looks like a  melted caramac bar lol.

worth lookin at the waterpump id say.

did u try flushing out the system?
