Been looking into diff locks and wondered if anyone can answer my question.

When my GV is in 4 wheel drive the front axle diff is locked, so why do they make diff locking kits for the front ?

The other day my GV got bogged down in the sand trying to get my boat out despite beeing in low ratio 4WD.  Do you think a diff lock on the rear axle would have made much difference ?

Many thanks.

Karl

Hiya mate, are you sure about that? I'd be surprised it it's got a locker in the front diff as standard... I'm not certain about the GV but I though most suzukis were part-time 4wd. So it's RWD when it's in 2H, then 4WD when it's in 4H and 4L. They don't have a centre diff, so when you put it in 4WD the drive is distributed equally to front and rear axles (this is the equivalent of engaging the centre diff lock on a Land Rover), but both the front and rear axles have open diffs (although some vitaras came with Limited Slip Diffs in the rear axle), so you could potentially spin one front and one rear wheel and end up going nowhere, for ecample if you got cross axled or had one side of the vehicle on ice, the first wheel to let go spins freely and takes all the power, so the other one on the axle has no drive. This is where locking diffs come in, with a locker in the back axle the drive to the axle is distibuted equally to the left and right wheels no matter what, so even if one wheel is completely off the ground the other one will still have drive, this isn't the case with an open diff.

Ah right, when she sunk into the sand how many wheels were spinning? TBH soft sand is a bit of a srange one, the chances are she'd have dug herself in anyway, but if you were only spinning one front and one rear wheel then axle lockers would certainly have hepled.

Hi Dai,

Thanks for the reply.  When I wrote about the front axle diff being locked I based that on the fact that I put her in 4WD then selected neutral, jacked up the offside front and tried to spin the wheel, which I couldn't cos it was also trying to turn the drive shaft to the transfer case.  This is why assumed that the front axle diff becomes locked in 4WD.

Also when in 4WD its very difficult to turn on hard surface (I know you shouldn't do this but I think it lends weight to my theory Smile )

I'm certainly no expert so please enlighten me if my little experiment is flawed Wink

Regards
Karl
